The original Chesterfield Sofa was styled in the 1700's when Lord Philip Stanhope (Earl of Chesterfield) commissioned a piece of furniture which evolved into the Chesterfield Sofa we know today.
The original Chesterfield had rolled arms with the arm the same height as the back, the sofa was adorned with deep tufting and buttons and that style has carried on until today - although the arm and back styles have changed to afford a bit more comfort.
The early Chesterfield Sofas were constructed with solid timber frames which were then layered with Horse Hair in order to obtain the iconic shape with luxurious deep seat. Of course nowadays foam is mostly used although some of the original Victorian Chesterfield Sofas are restored using age old techniques and materials.
The majority of Chesterfield Sofas were constructed using traditionally dark leathers such as the Oxblood, Green, Black, Brown and Deep Blue. These colours were used to portray wealth and class which is why so many of them are still used in commercial premises and upmarket homes today.
